ÉTYM. 1495; repris 1905 en biologie, génétique; lat. letalis « mortel », de letum « mort ».
Biologie.
1 Qui provoque la mort. || Gène létal, responsable d'une anomalie qui entraîne la mort de la cellule sexuelle, de l'œuf fécondé, de l'embryon ou d'un individu après la naissance. || Facteur létal, léthal.
2 Qui entraîne la mort (d'un être ou d'un tissu vivant quelconque, animal ou végétal). || Température létale. || Dose létale (d'un produit toxique, d'un rayonnement ionisant).
